Sailplanes have been a common sight in Tehachapi since 1961, when Fred and Goldie Harris opened the Holiday Haven Soaring School. The phenomenal lift conditions generated by the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the North, the Tehachapi Mountains to the South, and the Mojave Desert to the East have produced countless spectacular, record-breaking flights. In 1979, Larry Barrett purchased the airport, changed the name to Fantasy Haven and moved to Tehachapi with his already popular soaring school, Skylark North. Since that time, hundreds of glider pilots have earned their wings at the flight school. In 1990, the airport name was changed to Mountain Valley.
